Snowe was elected a U.S. senator from her home state of Maine in 1994 and was the second woman, after Margaret Chase Smith, to represent Maine in the Senate. A Republican, Snowe served in the Senate until her third term ended in January 2013. She is the fourth woman ever to be elected to both houses of Congress and the first woman in American history to serve in both houses of a state legislature and in both houses of Congress. Snowe is currently a senior fellow at the Bipartisan Policy Center and cochairs its Commission on Political Reform. Book signing to follow. Funding: Hollins Distinguished Speakers Fund |
