“Splendid Threads”: Considerations in Preserving the Little Theater’s Renaissance Tapestries Textile Conservator Jane Hammond will introduce the audience to the field of textile conservation and its importance in preserving art and material culture. Hammond will also share her own history as well as the Intermuseum Conservation Association's mission as the nation’s oldest nonprofit conservation lab. The main focus of the presentation will be about the evolution of tapestry conservation within the field: how works were repaired and cared for in the past and the impact of some of those treatments on the current state of Hollins tapestries. The final portion will address remediation and intervention treatments related to the unfortunate wetting incident and preservation initiative to ensure their stability for future generations. This lecture is presented in conjunction with Renewing Threads: Tapestries and the Art of Textile Conservation and is funded in part by the City of Roanoke through the Roanoke Arts Commission. Followed by a reception and viewing of our recently restored Renaissance tapestries. Exhibit through February 26. Hours are Tuesday through Sunday from Noon-5 pm, with extended evening hours on Thursday until 8 pm. Masks are required. |
