Description
The Taubman Museum of Art’s permanent collection is a major cultural arts asset for southwestern Virginia, and our exhibition Friends and Neighbors is the culmination of our collective work, tying into our 65th anniversary celebration in 2016. The collection, first started in the 1950s, holds significant examples of American art. Friends and Neighbors introduces over 60 never-before-exhibited acquisitions given by donors with ties to the Roanoke Valley, created by such renowned artists as Thomas Cowperthwaite Eakins, Jack Levine, and John James Audubon as well as contemporary artists such as Robert Rauschenberg and regional luminaries, among others. The exhibition also presents archival elements to demonstrate the works' significance in art history. Free and open to the public.
